California-Friendly Gardens
for Orange County
Our design approach is based on the
importance of good client relationships.
We develop our design ideas by listening
to clients and using their goals as a
guideline, taking the architecture of the
house into account while highlighting
the natural beauty of the property.
A Passion for Plants
As our name suggests, plants are our passion. Our landscape designs are rich in plant textures, contrasts, and colors. This focus and knowledge of plants also helps to ensure that the softscape -- the living, dynamic part of the landscape -- will be appropriate for the landscape for many years to come.

I can't say enough positive things about this company! I recommend them whenever possible. We have hired them for 2 different jobs, the front and back yards. They transformed our yard from dead and ugly to beautiful and private. We have a mid-century modern home and wanted a specific feel to our landscape. Our main goals were drought tolerant plants and to provide privacy. After a visit to our yard and a discussion of our wishlist, we were presented with a design plan detailing growth and maintenance. We were very confident in their direction and couldn't be happier with the end result. They completed the project quickly on both jobs. We are really looking forward to the next time we can work with them!

We had an idea for making our yard native and/or drought tolerant. We happened upon the Plant Nerd and hit it off immediately. They totally designed and redid both our front and back yards. We now have a great DG path in the back and can easily handle 20 or more guests delighting in our landscaping and garden railroad. The plants out front have become a haven for hummingbirds and other small birds. No more grass watering, no more bi-weekly gardener fees. Just lovely blooming plants, trees, and a bubbling fountain as well. We love to have people over and are delighted to recommend Plant Nerd to all!

We live in Santa Ana near South Coast Plaza. We had both our front and back yards landscaped, including lighting. During the planning phase, Korina met with us and answered all of our questions so that we would be sure we were getting what we wanted. The landscape plans were very detailed, computer generated and gave us great views of what it would look like. It was a great business experience and we would do it all over again with The Plant Nerd.
Korina and her husband, Chris are a fine-tuned duo. Korina artistically designed our simple, small yard into a gorgeous native, California environment with a Pacific Northwest flair. Chris and his friendly, fun-loving team prepared the soil and installed the plants and lighting in a timely fashion. They are always available for questions by phone and will follow up on anything to help our garden thrive. We are so happy with our experience and recommend The Plant Nerd to everyone who sees our yard and says, "Wow!"

We begin all of our new client interactions with a 1 1/2 hour consultation. We come to your home and discuss all aspects of your landscape project, including design ideas, budget, hardscape materials, plants, and so on. We always travel with our computer, which contains thousands of photographs and information about hardscape materials, design ideas, and plant material.
If you need hardscape, softscape, and garden features (barbeque housing, water features, etc), we can do the design. We will survey your property, meet with you throughout the design process, make recommendations, and provide you with bid-ready documents (CAD format). You will need to obtain bids from contractors. We can also be hired during the installation to ensure that the goals of the design are achieved.
If your hardscape is complete or there are no changes to your existing hardscape, we can create a softscape design using photo-realistic digital imaging. During our meeting, we can download photos of your home onto our computer and begin to create a landscape right before your eyes. We follow up this service with a package that includes the digital designs, plant briefs with pictures of the individual plants, and a plant list indicating quantities, sizes, and prices.
After the design is complete, we can help you coordinate removals, make irrigation adjustments, install the plants, and put all the finishing touches on your new landscape. For those who prefer to do their own planting, we can bring all the soil amendments, fertilizers, top mulch, and plants and place them in their planting locations.
We provide an estimate based on the scope of work prior to any design project, installation, or delivery.
The use of rocks and boulders adds a new level of texture to a garden while enhancing the color of the plants around it. Stone can create a focal point or make a subtle trail that the eye follows across the landscape. Artificial rocks are useful for covering piping and other material that would otherwise detract from the look and feel of the landscape.
Arbors and gazebos are great for gatherings and social get-togethers. They provide shade and interest while adding aesthetics to your garden.
Seating walls and planters help define space while remaining functional and attractive.
Using an structural features in your landscape helps enhance the usability and comfort of your garden.
Water features are a great accent to any garden. We have the ability to retrofit certain pots and stones to become beautiful focal points for your landscape design.
Whether a fully custom fireplace or a prefabricated fire pit, having a fire feature is a great way to gather people together. We offer custom fire feature design and fire feature ideas for your landscape.
Irrigation
Drip System
Drip irrigation systems save water and fertilizer by allowing water to drip directly onto the roots of plants through a network of valves, pipes, tubing, and emitters. It is approximately 70% more effective than sprinklers. Your existing sprinkler system can be easily converted to drip and the maintenance required is much less. We are firm believers of the benefits of drip system. We use Netafim tubing to deliver water directly to the base of the plant.

Pollution Prevention Through Plants
Many homeowners don't realize how much of an effect their yard can have on the ocean. Urban runoff carries pollutants such as pesticides and herbicides, synthetic fertilizers, sediment, oil, brake pad dust, animal excrement, etc out to our ocean. Gas powered equipment used to mow, prune and haul away over-planted vegetation also contribute to air pollution - which eventually settles into water bodies.
